The buzzword in the digital era is declutter. This is assuming greater importance due to the overload of information, and the number of options that are available for performing for discharging a single action. Consequently, users are now confronted with the problem of too many. For instance, the numbers of applications that are available on a Smartphone can actually cause more confusion than efficiency. Entrepreneur Anand Mishra states that out of a large number of applications that are available on a phone, only a handful is used frequently. This extends to virtually every aspect of the operations in a business. The adverse effects of clutter are not only the chaos and confusion but in some cases will also pose to be a security threat. Many businesses have found that their operations have been compromised because of intrusion or malicious attacks. This typically occurs when the credentials of an employee are compromised. For instance, an employee, who uses a personal device for performing official tasks, will become a security threat if he is or her credentials are compromised. This makes it necessary for organizations to ensure that their applications are r secure. Achieving this is possible only when employees and organizations declutter their workspace.
This involves the installation and use of applications that are authorized by its admin. All other applications need to be uninstalled, regardless of the innovative nature of the applications or use cases. If a specific application needs to be used in the workplace, it needs to be something that is authorized. This is important considering the fact that the digital era is best known for or changes that are sweeping through the ecosystem as far as workplaces are concerned. For instance, BYOD and remote working are popular throughout enterprises. Compromised credentials of one individual are enough to cripple the operations of the entire organization. Despite being digital natives, millennials are known to take risks when it involves downloading and use of applications. This is precisely why it is important for organizations to ensure strict compliance with a policy of decluttering the workplace. The tools and applications used for the execution of tasks need to be verified and limited to just the required number. Most employees are unaware of downloaded applications and it is this lack of knowledge about applications that reside on a system that creates increased security risks. Cyber security at the workplace needs adequate attention and should never be an afterthought. Security of information and data is no more the exclusive responsibility of it, but it needs the attention of every employee at the workplace. This is mainly because of the fact that technology is at the forefront of every organization. IT is no more a back-office function, but it is used in all activities, across all departments in an organization. This could be internal facing applications, or this could be external-facing interfaces. It is, therefore, necessary to ensure that employees and the organization have a policy in place to prevent compromise of digital assets.
